HBL is a leading Voice Biometrics company aiming to deliver a ground-breaking voice biometrics ID solution which replaces passwords or PINs.
The company is of the view that today’s commercial solutions in voice biometrics fail to deliver the required accuracy levels on passive conversational speech. All voice biometrics solutions today are limited domain and require significant specialist development and tuning. Every time the customer wants to use voice biometrics in a new way in the business, the customer must go through the same long development process again.
The project’s approach to voice biometrics was based on the acoustic correlates of voice quality. The acoustic correlates are physical parameters that correlate to the individual and
results in subtle differences among people’s vocal tract physiology.
To develop this into a tangible solution required further research, development, and design.
Due to its revolutionary work, HBL had in the course of its operation attracted the attention of the EU and other Grant award bodies.
HBL has been advised by its then advisors that because of the Grants awards it will not qualify under the R&D scheme.
HBL was introduced to Alexander Rosse via our trusted networks.
Alexander Rosse was able to not only analyse the various grants received to date and advise on the potential impact on the claim but also advised on the best way to maximise the claim .
Grants classed as state aid Grant funding can only be included in claims submitted through the RDEC scheme. However, submitting the claim through the RDEC scheme reduces the tax credit rate from 33p for every £1 spend to 10p for every £1 spend. Despite this, Arth Limited R&D Tax Specialists worked out the best option for the client resulting in the most optimum solution.
The Company was seeking to bring affordable and healthy food to the market via the development of meal pots that retain their freshness, taste and shelf-life without the use of preservatives or sauces.
Key to the Company’s objectives is to focus on high vegetable and low meat ratios within the range of pots to help move away from industrialised meat farming and the potential adverse consequences to personal health and wellbeing, as well as in terms of negative environmental impact.
The objective of combining freshness and taste with healthy ingredients meant that the Company would have to develop a small-scale food technology solution that would have the technical
capabilities to retain its shelf-life for commercial retail purposes.
Like most clients we take on, this company has been convinced that it’s activities will never qualify for R&D despite its innovative activities in the field of food and science.
Our senior tax manager was great at explaining how everything worked, and what information was required. Once this was done, Alexander Rosse took care of all the documentation. It was very professional.
The amounts received from the exercise enabled the client to fund further Research and Development activities.
The company was formed in 2009 by a group of ex-special forces engineers. The company’s activities focus on three main areas; namely the provision of training courses, Internal product development and external testing and product development.
The purpose of the project is to allow covert operators to gain access to alarmed premises in order to conduct further intelligence exploitation. Currently, this requires the user to attack the EPROM microchip within the alarm panel which carries high risk and is very slow. The Project mitigates this risk entirely and significantly reduces the time spent defeating the alarm.
Typical of most clients, they had given up on any future R&D claim as a resulted of a previously rejected claim. From experience most of such claims are as a result of poorly written technical reports. This often results in unsolicited and time consuming HMRC enquiries.
Alexander Rosse was not only able to get HMRC to reverse its decision but also was able to file four consecutive successful enquiry free claims on behalf of the client.
Alexander Rosse clients have an enquiry rate of less than 2%, compared to an industry average of 7-9%. Receiving notification of an enquiry can be daunting, but when HMRC do raise one, we are there for our clients to support them towards the best outcome.
NML are a leading UK-based innovator of power transmission technologies driving forwards the development of its Link-Chain technology, the biggest breakthrough in power transmission technology since the invention of the roller-chain.
The technology developed by the company are hardware designs that fundamentally changes the field of mechanical motion.
NML’s chain dramatically reduces wear by sharing the transmitted force over all of the teeth on the sprocket at the same time, this leads to an ~86% reduction in peak stress compared to a conventional roller-chain, enabling a 10 times increase in sprocket lifespan and 3 times increase chain lifespan.
With NML’s solution mechanical wear does not have to be a primary consideration anymore; meaning that different materials such as self-lubricating plastics and carbon fibre with additional benefits such as hygiene, cost and weight reductions can be used in chain and transmission design.
With current chain technology, over 60% of the transmitted power is acting on only one tooth and chain link at any one time, leading to high mechanical wear and is the reason why expensive metals are required for both chains and sprockets.
In cases like these, applicable consumable costs (such as power, some materials and water), and staffing costs could be included in the claim for R&D tax credits.
For a specialist engineering company, discovering that there is government support for their innovative work has made a really positive impact. Improved cash flow is an obvious benefit.
Alexander Rosse was also able to help the client identify areas of improvement in its time keeping ad cost capturing process for R&D. This resulted in not only a speedy claim for the client but also the maximum possible claim.

When it comes to R&D claim, software development claims make up the bulk of claims due to the inherent challenges and technical difficulties of software development.
However, this also meaning that most of such developments are not qualifying development activities especially if they are routine and not ground-breaking in nature.
At Alexander Rosse we are able to speak to your CTO and other technical member of your team to be able to identify and separate which activities will qualify and then communicate this to HMRC in a language they are familiar with.
We have help clients with activities in Block chain, Crypto currencies, Biometrics through to Artificial intelligence and Machine learning. With a 100% track record when it comes to software related R& D claims we are your trusted advisors.
This case study documents a prestigious London based PR and communication advertising agency’s discovery that internal projects they undertake whiles helping their clients do qualify for R&D tax credits, and how Alexander Rosse helped them claim retrospectively.
The agency is a food and drink PR and communications agency, offering clients a disruptive fully integrated service from insight and planning, content creation, media and influencer relations, social media community management, event planning and management, all the way through to measurement and evaluation. As a cutting-edge digital agency, their projects often include research and development. Indeed, they stay at the forefront of their industry by undertaking pure R&D themselves away from client projects.
In a world where digital media is growing exponentially and overriding traditional print media, existing solutions do not provide clients with in-depth meaningful analysis to demonstrate the value of work delivered at the evaluation stage.
The agency has developed and continues to improve a platform that employ a host of tools which will significantly improves the efficiency of the existing manual processes and systems in place.
The system also educates clients on benchmarking systems to enable cross performance comparison between different campaigns to inform and influence future business decisions.
The agency has been in operation for years. However, they have only started claiming the incentive in the last few years. Like so many other digital companies, they simply didn’t realise that they qualified.
They’d even had informal conversations with other advisers who suggested they didn’t do R&D, but their understanding was transformed after a conversation with Alexander Rosse after a routine meeting at our London offices.
Fortunately, there is scope to look back at two to three years’ worth of R&D activity, hence the company were able to make up for lost time.
With Our efficient R&D Claim process, we were able to ensure that a claim was filed very quickly to prevent a further loss of the relief resulting in a claim going back the equivalent of 3 accounting periods.

The company had received an eight-figure investment sum to fund its R&D activities. Due to the size of the claim the company was keen to find a trust advisor who can recoup and maximise any potential repayment for HMRC.
We were introduced to the client via our high tech start up accelerator network.
Alexander Rosse was able to work closely with the CTO and the CFO to identify all areas of expenditure and all the qualifying expenditure underlying their innovative technology.
It is a fact that HMRC tend to pay more attention to larger claims. In fact sized matters when it comes to R&D claims and hence choosing an advisor with the relevant experience and competence in dealing with such claims is of primary importance in order to ensure a successful claims.
Alexander Rosse clients have an enquiry rate of less than 2%, compared to an industry average of 7-9%. Receiving notification of an enquiry can be daunting, but when HMRC do raise one, we are there for our clients to support them towards the best outcome.
This case study focuses on one of a Building technology client.
The company is a fast-growing information technology company operating in the construction, real estate and asset management sector specialising in building information modelling.
The company had developed and built a disruptive project management and “translation engine” software solution for the sector that facilitates the efficient transfer of information for the lifecycle of construction projects, thereby maximising efficiency, minimising waste and ultimately contributing to the “Digital Built Britain” strategy.
The platform also allows for increased collaboration and cooperation in the construction industry and assists with the discovery, reporting and analysing of pre-construction issues(namely design faults), data deficiencies or misalignment of project objectives.
At Alexander Rosse, we believe that when it comes to R&D it is not really what you do but rather how you do it. Fortunately for this client they have been a compliance services client from day one and hence we were able to identify their R&D qualifying activities and projects from day one to ensure full recovery.
The company is an information technology start-up company operating in the health sector.
The company has developed a disruptive image analysis platform that allows the development of image derived biomarkers for drug development and clinical diagnosis. The solution automatically segments whole-body or partial body MRI scans into different tissue types and provide detailed quantification without any human intervention.
The platform employs machine-learning techniques and computer vision algorithms to analyse whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans without manual intervention. The ability to quantify body composition from medical imaging data automatically makes direct fat and muscle measurements affordable and scalable in clinical trials, clinical practice and population imaging studies.
The company believes that by employing machine learning in the application, the resulting artificial intelligence will ensure more accurate diagnoses are reached and reduce the risk of misdiagnosis and delayed diagnoses. The company believes that a lot of medical malpractice lawsuits stem from the misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis of a medical condition, illness, or injury. Misdiagnosis or delayed misdiagnosis leads to incorrect treatment, delayed treatment, or no treatment at all, a patient’s condition can be made much worse, and they may even die.
Furthermore, the platform aims to offer an end-to-end image analysis that accommodates DICOM data as input and scales with customer demand. The software will ensure consistent results by utilizing summary statistics, data analytics and visual inspection of the volumetric data.
The company believes that the images collated from MRI and CT scanners and the resulting analysis can be shared across the platform with medical specialist; This will not only improve diagnosis but will also enable collaborations amongst specialist in a way that current solutions do not offer.
Throughout its journey towards commercialisation, the team at Alexander Rosse worked closely with the company.
